SMEG was formed in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni, at first as a metal enamelling business before widening into appliance producing.

By the 1960s, a lot of chillers sold in Europe were made in Italy, and SMEG established themselves as makers of excellent quality, splendid refrigerators. Atypically , SMEG has stayed a family-run company, which explains their unique vision in appliance design. The SMEG range of retro refrigerators and refrigerator freezers swiftly became favored by shoppers who were bored with plain white boxy refrigerators and freezers, and demanding something special and trendy.

Since the launching of their original 1950s American style FAB28 refrigerator, the selection of models has been repetitively added to.
